Two tools, two very different jobs
The quickest way to pick the right tool is to ask one question: is there something solid behind what you're fastening? If you're closing the flaps of a box, you need a carton closer. If you're fixing into timber, you need a tacker.

How to choose the right fasteners
Fasteners only fit the tool they're made for. Match the series to your tool first, then pick a leg length to suit what you're fastening.
For cartons: 292 series, 16mm or 19mm
A wide crown spreads the load across the flap so it won't tear through. As a rule of thumb, 16mm legs suit most single wall boxes, and 19mm gives extra grip on thicker or double wall board.
For timber: T50 series, 8mm, 10mm or 12mm
Start with 10mm for most jobs. Drop to 8mm for thin fabric and paper, and step up to 12mm when you're fixing through something thicker, like doubled-over canvas or heavy sheeting.
Too short or too long?
If the legs are too short they pull out. If they're too long they can bend over or poke through into the product. When in doubt, test a few on a spare piece of the same material.

Should you staple or tape your cartons?
For most boxes, packaging tape is quicker and gives a cleaner seal. Carton closers come into their own on heavy or oversized boxes, reused cartons, and anything stored in cool, damp or dusty conditions where tape can lose its grip. They also make tampering more obvious. Plenty of warehouses use both, and at higher volumes a carton sealer is usually the fastest option.
Tips for a clean, strong result
Hold the tool square and press it firmly flat against the surface before firing. Check the first few on each job to make sure the legs are fully folded or fully driven. Keep a spare box of fasteners at every bench so nobody runs dry mid-order, and clear jams with the tool unloaded. Wear safety glasses when using a tacker, and never point it at anyone. Pair your tools with the right cardboard boxes for the load.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a staple gun to close cardboard boxes?
Not really. A tacker fires straight into whatever is underneath, so the legs don't fold over and the fastener pulls out. A carton closer folds the legs over on the inside of the flap, which is what keeps a box shut.
Do other brands fit the Arrow T50?
Yes, as long as they're sold as T50 type. T50 is a standard size, so any genuine T50 fastener will fit. Other series won't, even if the length looks right.
What leg length should I use for cartons?
As a rule of thumb, 16mm suits most single wall boxes and 19mm is better for thicker or double wall board. Test a few on your own cartons to be sure.
Is stapling stronger than taping a box?
On heavy, oversized or reused cartons, and in cold or damp storage, a carton closer usually holds better because it doesn't rely on adhesive. For everyday cartons, tape is quicker and gives a neater finish.
