The 3 Main Types of Pallet Plastic Wrap

Most businesses choose between Cast, Blown, or Fusion wrap. The right option simply depends on the weight of your pallet, if it has sharp corners, and how you wrap it.

Cast Wrap (Clear & Quiet)
The best all-rounder for everyday wrapping

Cast pallet wrap is glossy, smooth, and quiet when you pull it off the roll. It is the most popular choice for general pallets because it's incredibly easy to use and looks great.

✔ Why it's great:
Super clear so you can read barcodes easily; Quiet to unroll; Great value for standard boxes.
✖ What to consider:
Can puncture more easily than blown wrap if it rubs against very sharp metal or wood corners.
Blown Wrap (Tough & Sticky)
Extra strength for heavy loads and sharp edges

Blown pallet wrap is a heavy-duty film made to be puncture-resistant. It has a slightly sticky texture that grabs onto itself tightly, making it ideal for heavy or awkward loads.

✔ Why it's great:
Brilliant resistance to sharp edges and punctures; Sticks incredibly well; Works perfectly in cold rooms or freezers.
✖ What to consider:
A bit cloudy to look through; Can be quite noisy when you pull it off the roll.
Fusion Wrap (Thin & High-Stretch)
Smart film designed to reduce plastic waste

Fusion wrap is a high-tech film designed to stretch significantly further than standard films. It allows busy packing areas to use less overall plastic while keeping loads completely secure.

✔ Why it's great:
Saves money by using less plastic per pallet; Holds very tightly; Fewer roll changes needed.
ⓘ Quick Tip:
Works best when pulled firmly with the right settings on a machine, or with a good technique when wrapping by hand.

Choosing Your Wrap Color: Clear vs. Black

Depending on what you are shipping, picking the right color option handles key logistical requirements:

Clear Pallet Wrap (High Visibility)

The universal standard for stock management. Clear plastic film allows dispatch drivers and loaders to read inventory labels, identify product sets, and scan freight barcodes seamlessly without pulling the packaging apart.

Black Pallet Wrap (Security & Concealment)

Our opaque black pallet wrap completely conceals contents. It is heavily used to cover high-value electronics, shield products from light degradation, and prevent opportunistic theft across shared freight transport lanes.

Quick Wrap Comparison

Film Type Best For Main Benefit What to Keep in Mind
Cast Wrap Standard boxes and everyday pallet wrapping Crystal clear & quiet to unroll Can tear on very sharp metal or wood corners
Blown Wrap Heavy, irregular, or sharp-edged pallets Brilliant puncture resistance & grip A bit cloudy; noisy when unrolling
Fusion Wrap Busy warehouses looking to reduce waste Uses less plastic per pallet Needs to be pulled tight to work best

Pallet Plastic Wrap Selection Checklist

  • Light to medium boxes: Clear Cast wrap is usually your best and easiest option.
  • Sharp corners or extra heavy loads: Go for Blown wrap, or a thicker grade of Cast film.
  • Cold storage & freezers: Blown wrap is the traditional favorite for chilly areas because it stays sticky.
  • Wrapping lots of pallets a day: Moving to machine wrap rolls and an automatic wrapper saves massive time.
  • Sourcing wholesale or commercial bulk quantities: Talk directly to our Villawood desk for scaled contract options.

What is pallet wrap made of?

Most stretch wrap is made from a high-quality type of plastic called polyethylene. It's chosen because it can stretch tightly and cling to itself effortlessly. This keeps your boxes firmly in place while protecting your items from dust and light rain during transport.

Can stretch wrap be recycled?

Yes! Clean stretch wrap can be completely recycled. Just make sure to keep it free from heavy tape, paper shipping labels, or grease. Let us know how your warehouse handles commercial waste and our team can suggest practical soft-plastic recycling options.

Friendly Pallet Wrap FAQs

What does plastic wrap for pallets actually do?
It binds your boxes and products together tightly so they don't tip over or slide around while shifting in delivery trucks or forklifts. It also seals out dust and light rain splatters.
What's the difference between hand wrap and machine wrap?
Hand rolls are lightweight and easy for a person to carry around a pallet manually. Machine wrap is built for automatic equipment, arriving on much larger, heavier rolls with specialized high-stretch polymers.
Is stretch wrap the same as pallet shrink wrap?
Not quite! While people often look for "pallet shrink wrap," they usually want stretch film. Stretch wrap stretches tightly around a load using mechanical tension. True shrink wrap is slipped on loosely first and then requires an industrial heat gun to pull tight.
How many times should I wrap a pallet?
A great rule of thumb is to spin 3 to 4 layers around the bottom wooden base to anchor it, overlap the layers by halfway as you move to the top, and add an extra layer at the crown to lock everything down securely.
